What counts as an NAD+ supplement
NAD+ is a coenzyme in every cell. A supplement can contain NAD+ itself or a precursor the body converts to it: NMN sits one step away and NR two. "NAD+ booster" on a pack often means a precursor, so read the ingredients.
NAD+ itself is the weak link. In a 2019 human pilot, NAD+ infused into a vein was cleared from plasma for at least the first 2 hours, and the breakdown products matched enzymes that split NAD+ apart (Grant 2019). In mice, swallowed NAD+ raised urinary nicotinamide metabolites the way nicotinamide did (Kimura 2006). The one randomised oral NAD+ trial we found tested a proprietary formulation for 5 days: whole-blood NAD rose 53% against placebo and plasma NAD stayed flat (Kornilov 2026). That is worth watching, but it is one short trial.
Precursors have the longer record. A 2026 systematic review of 33 human studies found oral NR and NMN consistently raised blood or cellular NAD+, while effects on functional, metabolic and other health outcomes were mixed and often null (Gallagher 2026). Fairly stated, they support NAD+ levels and healthy cell function.

A 2026 retrospective review of 500mg NAD+ infusions given four days running found sessions averaged 97 minutes, with participants reporting stomach symptoms, a faster heart rate and chest pressure during the drip. All resolved when it ended (Reyna 2026).

NMN or NR: what the trials say
In the only head-to-head trial, 65 healthy adults took NMN, NR, nicotinamide or placebo for 14 days. NMN and NR raised circulating NAD+ by a comparable amount (Christen 2026, open-label, sponsored by Nestlé), and gut bacteria turned part of each into nicotinic acid.

NMN is usually sold as 500mg and NR as 300mg, and NMN costs less a day: 31p on RGENR8's first order against roughly £1.17 to £1.56 for NR. How to choose: a checklist
- Read the ingredients. NAD+, NMN, NR and NADH are different things.
- Pick a form with human trial data for blood NAD+. Oral NMN and NR have it. For NAD+ in any form, ask the seller for the trial and look it up on PubMed.
- Compare cost per month at the serving you will take, because dose per capsule varies a lot.
- Look for a single ingredient and batch testing. Our certificate of analysis checklist shows what to ask for.
- Check legal status. NR chloride is an authorised novel food in Great Britain. NMN has no GB novel food authorisation yet, and its application, RP-2116, is at risk assessment.
