What is NMN? The supplement explained in plain English

NMN is a building block your body turns into NAD+

NAD+ is a coenzyme that cells use in energy metabolism, and the repair enzyme PARP and the sirtuin family of enzymes depend on it (Massudi et al., PLoS One 2012). NMN is a precursor, a raw material the body converts into NAD+. Inside cells it is one enzyme step away, and nicotinamide riboside (NR) goes through NMN first (Yoshino, Baur and Imai, Cell Metabolism 2018).

In human skin, NAD+ falls with age. Across 49 samples from people aged 0 to 77, it declined as age rose in both men and women (Massudi et al.). That is why researchers study NAD+ precursors such as NMN.

NMN also occurs in food, in small amounts. A 2016 analysis measured 0.25 to 1.88mg per 100g in edamame, broccoli, cucumber and cabbage, and 0.26 to 1.60mg in avocado and tomato (Mills et al., Cell Metabolism 2016). One 500mg capsule would take more than 26kg of edamame at its richest.

What 25 human trials have measured

25 published human trials of oral NMN, run from 2020 to 2026 with 884 participants, are in our NMN human trials dataset. By our count, the authors of 11 of them report higher blood NAD+ after NMN, including 8 randomised, placebo-controlled trials such as Yi et al., GeroScience 2023 and Christen et al., Nature Metabolism 2026.

Higher blood NAD+ suggests the NMN was absorbed and used. It does not by itself show a health benefit, and the other outcomes are mixed: a 24-week trial in 14 older men found no improvement in grip strength or walking speed against placebo (Akasaka et al. 2023), and a 60-person trial found no difference on its primary stepping test (Morifuji et al. 2024). Several trials were funded or supplied by NMN makers, which the dataset records. For what people take NMN for and what the research looked at, see NMN benefits.

NMN comes as capsules, powder, sublingual powder and liposomal capsules

24 of the 25 human trials gave NMN by mouth, and the other compared swallowing with sublingual dosing.

NMN, NR and NAD+ are three different things

NAD+ is the molecule cells use, and NMN and nicotinamide riboside (NR) are two precursors the body can turn into it. In a 2026 trial that compared them directly, 14 days of NMN or NR raised blood NAD+ by a comparable amount (Christen et al., Nature Metabolism). NAD+ itself is sold as capsules and IV drips, and a drip costs £250 to £449 a session (checked 11 October 2026). NR has a GB novel food authorisation and NMN does not yet. NMN vs NR vs NAD+ drips compares cost, trials and legal status side by side.

NMN has no Great Britain novel food authorisation yet

NMN has no GB novel food authorisation yet. The application, RP-2116, is at risk assessment with the Food Standards Agency. NMN is sold by many UK brands, 43 of them in our price index. Our guide to NMN and UK novel food rules explains what that means for buyers.

How to choose a good NMN supplement: five checks

Five checks before you buy NMN.

Dose per capsulemg of NMN per capsule stated, one capsule per servingA 1,000mg serving can be four 250mg capsules
Form and purityBeta-NMN with a stated purity, such as 99% or moreYou can check the figure against a batch certificate

Price per gramPack price divided by grams of NMN in the packA pack price alone hides how much NMN is inside

A worked example: a pack of 90 capsules at 500mg holds 45g of NMN, so £27.99 is £0.62 a gram. A pack of 60 capsules at 125mg holds 7.5g, so £50 is £6.67 a gram.

RGENR8 Pure NMN Pro is 500mg of beta-NMN per capsule at no less than 99% purity, in a vegan HPMC shell with no fillers or binders. It is made to GMP-equivalent standards, and every batch is tested by an independent accredited lab, with a Certificate of Analysis on request. Common questions

What is NMN?

NMN is nicotinamide mononucleotide, a molecule your body uses to make NAD+, a coenzyme involved in cellular energy. It occurs in small amounts in foods such as edamame and avocado and is sold as a supplement. RGENR8 Pure NMN Pro is a single-ingredient 500mg capsule.

What does NMN do?

In the body, NMN is converted into NAD+, which cells use in energy metabolism. In our dataset of 25 human trials, the authors of 11 report higher blood NAD+ after NMN. The Pure NMN Pro label says: "Supports healthy cell function and may support overall vitality and well-being."

Is NMN natural?

NMN occurs naturally in the body and in small amounts in some foods, up to 1.88mg per 100g in edamame in a 2016 analysis. A capsule holds 500mg, so food cannot match it. Capsule NMN is manufactured rather than extracted from vegetables.

Is NMN the same as NAD+?

No. NAD+ is the coenzyme your cells use. NMN is a precursor, a raw material the body converts into NAD+. Nicotinamide riboside (NR) is another precursor. In a 2026 trial, 14 days of NMN or NR raised blood NAD+ by a comparable amount.

Is NMN legal in the UK?

NMN has no GB novel food authorisation yet. The application, RP-2116, is at risk assessment with the Food Standards Agency, and you can follow it on the FSA register. Many UK brands sell NMN.

MNM or NMN: which is right?

NMN is right. It stands for nicotinamide mononucleotide: N for nicotinamide, M for mono and N for nucleotide. MNM is a common typo with the first two letters swapped.
